Gap acceptance and lateral placing of vehicles are considered as prime parameters for analysing the behaviour of U-turning in vehicles at un-signalized median opening in urban areas. Critical gap is the sole parameter in gap acceptance phenomenon where critical position gives the vehicle’s location during U-turn operation. Data for this study were collected using video photography at six median openings on a sixlane road and three median openings on a four-lane road from two different cities of India. Data as extracted by categorizing the traffic stream into five different classes such as two-wheelers, three-wheelers, car/SUVs, LCVs (light commercial vehicles) and HCVs (heavy commercial vehicles). Three different methodologies (namely the traditional method, INAFOGA and modified Raff’s method) were utilized to estimate the critical gap. Critical position of vehicles is estimated using the markings on the pavement surface. Regression technique was used for modelling critical gap and position using different variables for each motorized mode. All the proposed models have a high coefficient of determination value which indicates its high significance level. Modelling of critical position for 3-wheelers was not framed as the P-value for each variable was higher than 0.05. The reason could be the randomness in data because of the undisciplined lateral movement of three-wheelers. A design recommendation for right turn pocket lanes near the median opening area is proposed especially for U-turning traffic based on the percentage of the U-turning traffic and maximum critical position of vehicles from the median edge.Keywords

The present study focuses on the comprehensive analysis of vehicles headway at signalized intersections under mixed traffic stream. Data were collected at five signalized intersections from three different cities (Allahabad, Delhi and Chandigarh) of India. The discharge headway of vehicles was analysed after the onset of green signal when the initial queue dissipated through the intersection. A box-and-whisker plot was generated for discharge headway of vehicles to quantify its equitable profile. The plot delineated that headway of vehicles decreased with the initial queue dispersion. Although the differences between headway of vehicles were almost immutable after the fifth queue position, gives a saturation headway of 2.05 sec/vehicle. The headway distribution at each queue position was also evaluated using various continuous distribution models. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test was performed to define the adequate distribution model. The statistical results obtained from the K-S test indicated that the discharge headway distribution at each queue position followed a log-normal distribution. Multilinear regression technique was applied to analyse and develop a model for discharge headway using green signal time and vehicle type as independent variables. The result indicated that longer green time had a significant impact on discharge headway. The outcomes of this study may be beneficial in the microsimulation model development for signalized intersections to assess their performance.Keywords

Saturation flow assessment at signalized intersections is one of the key features for analysing various performance measures such as capacity, level of service, signal strategies and coordination, and prediction of traffic flow models. Thus, an accurate estimation of saturation flow value is more beneficial at signalized intersections. Several studies have focused on the estimation of saturation flow in different roadway, traffic and control conditions. Earlier, saturation flow estimation methods were developed purely based on homogeneous traffic, where vehicle interaction was relatively less. However, in mixed traffic, an uneven distribution can be observed due to different vehicle dynamics and manoeuvrability with weak lane discipline. Thus, many studies have been carried out to frame an appropriate saturation flow estimation method. This study presents a comprehensive review on various saturation flow estimation methods developed in different traffic conditions; the drawbacks of the each method are also summarized. Moreover, a list of influencing factors affecting saturation flow value is provided. The general challenges in saturation flow estimation followed by some future direction for improvement in prediction models are also highlighted.Keywords
